WHY THE REJUVENATION OF LAKES ARE IMPORTANT?

It is important because it involves the cleaning of lake, pretreatment, churning and homogenization of lake water, application of spark floc, disinfectant etc. Lakes slowly die/disappear when the sediments settle which come from the inflow of the outside sources which may include industrial waste, and other water columns onto the surface, as the water flows slowly in the lake.

Water bodies are meant to be used for resource provision i.e. drinking, washings, irrigation, regulating services like flood and drought management, cultural services like religious practice and historic values.

Over the years due to population, urbanization and industrialization etc.  Water bodies are exploited. The plants, microbes and algae die. There is a process called eutrophication in which the oxygen levels in the lake decreases due to pollution and industrialization.

It is a state where the lake becomes toxic with high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus and they are silted heavily. There is low water clarity, high levels of aquatic plants growth, algal growth, and high nutrients. The oxygen levels in the lake are very low for any ecosystem to survive.

Here are some of the important features why it is necessary:

1. It acts as a natural reservoir, it increases the storage of water.

2. It constitutes natural biodiversity by maintaining the quality of water and atmospheric temperature.

3. It increases the ground water level.

4. It controls erosion of soil and reduces the risk of flood.

5. The lake is home to flora and fauna, the lakes becomes a place of recreation for people around. Lakes are the most valuable sources which maintain the temperature and support the ecosystem.
