AMI (Anaerobic Microbial Inoculum) is a bacterial consortium which converts faecal matter into gases and water. They operate in an anaerobic environment and are very sensitive to exposure to the outside environment. These Bacterial consortiums are pH-sensitive but robust for Temperature and can operate between 5 to 50 degree Celsius. The microbial consortium has been made by acclimatization, enrichment and bio-augmentation with the cold-active bacteria collected from Antarctica and low-temperature areas. It is composed of four clusters of bacteria belonging to hydrolytic, acido-genetic, aceto-genetic and methano-genetic groups with high efficiency of bio-degradation. An equilibrium is required to be maintained in different steps for the process to be sustainable or it leads to digester souring.
