A Bio-digester can treat human waste under anaerobic conditions into usable water and gasses in an eco-friendly manner. Technology is based on bio-digester developed by DRDO after 24 years of research and practical experimentations in Siachen and Antarctica.
This technology has 2 main components -
1. Anaerobic Microbial Consortium (AMI): The anaerobic microbial consortium (AMI) which is formulated from the group of bacteria that are very efficient in performing the bio-degradation of the human waste in a wide range of temperatures and in presence of toxic chemicals
2. Bio-Digester: This is the main container where the fermentation process takes place in the presence of Anaerobic Microbial Inoculum (AMI) devised & developed by DRDO. The Bio-digesters have specific designs, most suitable for carrying out fermentation & methanation processes.
Bio-digester technology has been used for resolving the problems of un-decomposed human waste. The innovation degrades and converts human waste into usable water and gases in an eco-friendly manner. The generated gas can be utilized for energy/ cooking and water for irrigation purposes. The process involves the bacteria which feed upon the faecal matter inside the tank through the anaerobic process which finally degrades the matter & releases methane gas that can be used for cooking along with the treated water for reuse.
The bio-digester technology has two components: Anaerobic microbial consortium & specially designed fermentation tank. The microbial consortium has been made by acclimatization, enrichment and bio-augmentation with the cold-active bacteria collected from Antarctica and low-temperature areas. It is composed of four clusters of bacteria belonging to hydrolytic, acido-genetic, aceto-genetic and methano-genetic groups with high efficiency of bio-degradation. The fermentation tank is made of metal/ FRP/RCC and has the provision of immobilizing the bacteria in large numbers.
Biodigester technology is environment friendly, maintenance-free and efficient without depending on conventional energy sources. The effluent is odourless and gets rid-off most of the pathogens.
