DRDO BIO-DIGESTER: A CLEAN WAY TO DISPOSE OF HUMAN WASTE, RECYCLE WATER
The bio-digester technology developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)...
View DetailsThe biogas sector has been receiving increasing attention around the world with the public and private initiatives to expand production.
There are some facts and myths about biogas namely:
1) The organic waste used in the bio digester can be of plant origin, animal origin, human production, industry activity.
Yes, it is truth. Leaves, straw, wood scraps, sugarcane bagasse, manure, feces, urine, household waste and industrial waste are some of the materials used to generate biogas .Sugarcane bagasse, manure, feces, urine, household waste and industrial waste are some of the main materials used to generate biogas .In addition, leaves, straw and wood remains, despite being lingo cellulosic materials and requiring specific pre-treatments, can also be considered for biogas generation.
2) Biogas started to be produced recently
It is a myth. Biogas was discovered in the 17th century, and came to be considered a source of energy from a demonstration of the generation of biogas through a mixture of manure and water, made by Louis Pasteur, in the 19th century.
3) Biogas is a mixture of all the gases produced during the decomposition of organic waste
It is a truth. Methane gas (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor (H2O), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3), among others, make up biogas.
4) The installation of bio digester is low cost
It is a myth. The project itself involves high investment and specific infrastructure, which includes, for example, plenty of water available for mixing and even the need for an external heat source to control the temperature. Feasibility should be evaluated taking into account this initial investment, long-term savings and environmental benefits.
5) Most of the biogas produced in Brazil is used to generate electricity
It is a truth. The use of biogas to generate electricity is the main energy application carried out in Brazilian biogas plants (87%). The thermal use of biogas is made in 11% of the units in operation for utilities such as burning in boilers to produce steam, drying grains to produce feed, heating poultry houses and drying sewage sludge.
